Create a Essay 1 folder in PJ4 First Last Google Docs Collection

Share only 25 of your best photos for the essay

Write a one page minimum typed explanation (in Google Docs, share in same folder):
1. paragraph that explains the essay concept or theme
2. Write about three photos on each of these points:
2a. give the name of the photo - what is it saved as in your Essay One folder
2b. How this picture fits into the theme
2c. How this picture was taken - camera settings, lighting, difficulties, angle, distance, etc.
2d. What are the elements of this photograph that make it a great photo - analyze the photo.

Tonight - Use Google Docs and create a new collection for each item below within your PJ3 folder.
1. share one or two or the best head shots that you took in class.
2. share your best picture that you edited in class with the iPads today. In order to do this you had to email it to yourself from the iPad.

Also, since the class is wrapping up on Friday, make sure that all of your Google folders have the necessary assignments complete in them.

Don't forget to post your two separate assignments - 10 of your best pictures yet for the two topics, must be posted in separate folders in Google docs: 1. Low Light and 2. Sunrise and Sunset

You should by now have created a PJ3 (Photo Journalism H3) folder with your first and last name in the title of the PJ3 folder - example: PJ3 Eliott Rodgers. You should make erodgers@hall-school.org an email collaborator so that I can see all of your folders inside your PJ3 folder.

Each assignment and class activity should be placed in a separate folder (google - collection) with the title of that assignment. You do not need to share these internal folders since I already have access to the enclosing folder.

Take pictures to produce ten excellent shots of items, objects or other images you normally don't see. Time off and with family and friends often will yield numerous images that are unique to a four day weekend and national holiday involving food. At the same time, there are plenty of things that will satisfy the assignment that has nothing to do with Thanksgiving and visiting people.

You should "Follow by email" this site. Unfortunately, you cannot use a school assigned email address.
This site will give periodic updates, reminders and assignment information for the class. By following the blog, you will get the text of each post automatically sent to your email.

Photo Essays - pictures and written essay due Tuesday.

Due Thursday -
Sunset (or Sunrise) assignment - take 10 different pictures using the sunrise and/or sunset. Include:
3 scenery shots - landscape, Mt. Tam, trees, mall, school in the morning or evening.
3 portraits - of people using the sunset or sunrise light.
3 pictures of sunlight coming through tree tops, over rooftops or other structures - zoomed in, closer up.

Take these shots when you take your landscape.
Plus one other picture of your choice.
2 pictures of the sun directly maximum.

Goal - capture the magic of the light and the hues of the sky (yellow, crimson, purple)
Write up - 1/2 page: poem (60 word min) or journal (min 200 words) about sunlight.

Use your Google Docs account to
1. Create a new collection "PJ2"
2. Open that folder then create a new collection in it "Low Light Pics"
3. Download your five best Low Light Pics from your hard drive, camera or sd card to your new Low Light Pics collection folder.
4. Highlight the collection (right click in windows; control (button) click in Apple)
5. Share the collection in the dialogue boxes...
6. Enter Mr. Rodgers email - teacher@erodgers.net
7. Save settings.
8. Make sure the notify by email box is checked (this is the default setting), so that I get an email notifying me you have added material to the folder, and allows me to click a link to your folder with your assignment of five pictures.

Due Tuesday - Photo Essay text and 15 - 25 pictures

Draft of photo essay explanation and captions, include between 15 - 25 photos in essay

Last night for homework, students were to finish the text for their photo essay as follows:
1. about 3/4 of a page minimum
2. all writing about pictures must include the actual photo ID number assigned by the camera for each camera.
3. Students should have a flash drive, cd of the pictures or bring the sd card that includes the edited collection of the photo essay (do not delete other assignments from the card).

Three paragraphs:
a. Paragraph 1 - explain the essay theme - what type of idea are these photos trying to capture and illustrate. Explain how the photos were composed - what general process was used?
b. Paragraph 2 - Discuss 3 pictures that best capture different aspects of the theme.
c Paragraph 3 - Write captions for 5 other pictures at least one sentence long for each.

Photo Essay pictures due by Sept. 8

We have been exploring various elements of composition, as well as working with camera settings to capture various subjects during the first two weeks. At this point, we are ready to embark on our first photo essay collection project. Samples of these photo essays will be posted on the internet, and students will be required to write captions and a short personal essay to go along with the photo essay. Most of the writing will occur in class.

Photo essays pictures should:
1. be a variety of macro, wide angle,and zoomed in shots.
2. use different lighting including adjusting white balance, and using flash. Utilize low light and shadow as well.
3. pictures of objects and people and landscapes.
4. Composition of different pictures should try to use contrast in light, shape, pattern and number of objects.
5. Pictures should be a variety of abstract and obvious images.
6. IMPORTANT - should be taken discretely, and should not be taken where they are not allowed - in classrooms, during passing periods, of people who do not want their picture taken, and in stores or restaurants where photos should not be taken.

Students are encouraged to use a single or combination of strategies below, but may also develop :
1. My life every 30 minutes - take a different type of picture of scenes that capture your daily life.
2. Theme - take pictures that cover a broad theme -
a. daily life, such as, "My life as a student," or "My athletic life."
b. topics - pick a topic that is broad or narrow enough, as necessary in order to take a wide variety of different shots, but not too broad as to not seem to have a tight topic when viewed by others.
examples:
food - take pictures in supermarkets, restaurants, the kitchen, the refrigerator, gardens, fruit trees.
families or groups of people - family scenes at home, in the mall or groups - sports teams, friends, professional groups (teachers, police)

White Balance and Subject Homework - this week

Play with the White Balance settings on your camera - set camera to program mode, and take the same picture with -1, 0, and +1 WB settings.

Also, pick a subject (object) to take many different pictures of, with different light, in different places and at different angles. Use multiple White Balance settings for the same shot.

You may try this at home if you have a camera. We will also work on these two activities all week at school.

Here are a few great photo sites (links below). Use them to send me one link for each of the exercises that we completed in class on Thursday and Friday. Your email to Mr. Rodgers should include a full link to the actual picture with a brief key word next to the link for each exercise.

Welcome to Photo Journalism

I would like to welcome you and your son or daughter to the Seventh Photo-Journalism Wheel class this year, in Room 601 during 5th period, which will run for the first six weeks of school. We will learn by doing. We will learn to take amazing pictures and learn to do interviews, conduct surveys, write great articles, and post our articles and pictures on our class website, which will become the student publications website.

This class is a great opportunity to learn to take and process great digital photos. The school has a number of digital cameras for the class, but if you give permission to your son or daughter to bring their digital cameras to school, we will have enough cameras for all students in the class daily. We will learn photo composition and editing strategies, and ultimately create an entire photo portfolio for your son or daughter and the class as a whole.

Along the way, we will also interview and write about our photo topics, using an integrated arts approach, so that the two outcomes foster each step through the process.

In coordination with Mrs. Wollman, a number of our by-products may also be used in the final production of the yearbook. On this score, I encourage your son or daughter to join the yearbook group if they are so inclined to be an editor, photographer and assistant to the yearbook with Mrs. Wollman.
